Helping Bulawayo’s animals, one rescue at a time

Volunteers play a very important role in helping the Bulawayo SPCA care for the animals that come through our doors. Many of the dogs and cats in our care have been abandoned, neglected, injured, frightened or surrendered, and they need more than just food and shelter. They need patience, kindness, attention and gentle human interaction to help them feel safe again. Every extra pair of hands makes a real difference, whether it is walking dogs, helping with cleaning, spending time with animals, taking photos for adoption posts, assisting at events, supporting fundraising, helping with repairs and maintenance, or offering transport where approved by the SPCA.

Volunteering is not only helpful to the shelter, but also deeply rewarding. It gives people the chance to make a direct difference in the life of an animal that may be waiting for a second chance. A short walk, a clean kennel, a kind voice, a good photo or a few hours of help can all improve an animal’s day and increase their chances of finding a loving home.

If you love animals and would like to get involved, please contact us to find out where help is currently needed. For the safety and wellbeing of the animals, all volunteers must go through a simple approval process before starting. This may include an interview, a discussion about your past experience with animals, and time spent seeing how you interact with the dogs and cats in our care. This helps us place volunteers in roles that are safe, suitable and helpful for everyone involved.

Our priority is always the wellbeing of the animals. Some animals may be nervous, reactive, unwell or still learning to trust people, so it is important that volunteers are calm, responsible and willing to follow guidance from the SPCA team. With the right support, volunteers become a valuable part of our work and help us give Bulawayo’s animals the care, comfort and kindness they deserve.
