Helping Bulawayo’s animals, one rescue at a time
Bulawayo SPCAThe Bulawayo SPCA helps cats and dogs that are lost, hurt, neglected, unwanted or in danger. We rescue animals, care for them, help them find homes, and teach our community how to look after pets properly.
Some animals come to us because they have been abandoned. Some are found on the road. Some are surrendered by owners who can no longer care for them. Every animal deserves kindness, food, safety and proper care.

Adopting a Pet
Adopting a pet is a beautiful act of kindness, but it is also a serious lifelong commitment. A dog or cat is not a toy, a short-term gift, or something to take home only because they look cute on the day. Every pet needs daily food, clean water, shelter, love, patience, training, vet care, vaccinations, parasite control and a safe home. Some animals from the SPCA may have had a difficult start, so they may need extra time to settle, trust and feel secure. Before adopting, please think carefully about your home, your time, your budget and your ability to care for that animal for the rest of its life.
Making a Donation
Donations make it possible for the Bulawayo SPCA to keep caring for animals that are lost, abandoned, injured, neglected or waiting for new homes. Every contribution helps, whether it is money, food, blankets, cleaning products, bowls, leads, toys or other useful supplies. Donations can be made through EcoCash, or you are welcome to drop off cash or goods at the SPCA shop in Bulawayo or directly at the SPCA shelter. No donation is too small — every bag of food, every blanket and every dollar helps give an animal safety, comfort and care when they need it most.
Emergency message
- If you see a badly injured dog or cat, please phone us immediately.
- If it is safe, stay with the animal until help comes.
- If you can safely transport the animal, bring it straight to the SPCA.
What we do
Our Services

Rescuing Pets
Rescuing animals in need is one of the most important services offered by the Bulawayo SPCA. We assist dogs and cats that are lost, injured, abandoned, neglected, unwanted or in danger, and bring them into a safe place where they can receive food, care and protection. If you see an animal that is hurt, frightened, trapped, starving, left without water, or at risk on the road, please do not ignore it. Phone the SPCA as soon as possible and give clear details of the location and what has happened. If it is safe to do so, stay nearby until help arrives or move the animal away from immediate danger. Every rescue matters, and quick action can save a life.

on-site vet clinic
Our on-site vet clinic helps animals in SPCA care and also supports members of the public where possible. The clinic can assist with important services such as vaccinations, deworming, flea and tick advice, spay and neuter operations, basic health checks, treatment for sick or injured animals, dental checks and general pet care guidance. Please phone before coming in to confirm clinic times, available services and current prices, as costs may depend on the animal, the treatment needed and the seriousness of the case. If your pet is very sick, weak, injured, not eating, vomiting, having diarrhoea, struggling to breathe, fitting or in pain, please do not wait — early treatment is usually kinder, cheaper and more successful.

Investigate reports of cruelty or neglect
The Bulawayo SPCA investigates reports of cruelty, neglect and animals being kept in unsafe or poor conditions. Please contact us if you see an animal being hurt, starved, abandoned, left without water, locked in the sun, badly neglected, or treated in a way that causes suffering. When making a report, clear information helps us respond properly, such as the exact location, what animal is involved, what you saw, when it happened, and any photos or videos taken safely. Please do not put yourself in danger or confront the owner. Phone the SPCA and allow our inspector to guide the next steps. Speaking up can protect an animal that cannot speak for itself.

Spay, Nuter & TNR
Spaying, neutering and TNR are some of the kindest and most effective ways to reduce animal suffering in our community. One unspayed female dog or cat can lead to many unwanted babies, and sadly many of these puppies and kittens end up hungry, sick, abandoned or injured on the roads. Spaying and neutering helps prevent unwanted litters and can also reduce roaming, fighting and some health risks. The SPCA also supports TNR, which means Trap, Neuter and Return. This is mainly used for community cats, and in some cases dogs, where the animal is safely caught, sterilised by a vet, and returned to a suitable area if it is healthy and safe to do so. TNR helps stop stray populations from growing and reduces suffering over time.

Run adoption processes so animals go to safe homes
The Bulawayo SPCA runs an adoption process to help make sure each animal goes to a safe, caring and suitable home. Adoption is not simply a matter of choosing a pet and taking it home the same day. We ask questions, guide adopters, and may arrange a home visit or inspection to check that the animal will have enough space, shelter, food, care and protection. This process is not there to make adoption difficult, but to protect the animal and support the new owner. Every dog and cat deserves a home where they will be loved, cared for properly, and treated as part of the family for life.

Teach the public about vaccinations, feeding, dental care, disease prevention and responsible ownership
The Bulawayo SPCA helps teach the public about responsible pet ownership so that animals can live healthier, safer and happier lives. Many common problems can be prevented when owners understand the importance of vaccinations, proper feeding, clean water, parasite control, dental care, sterilisation and early treatment when a pet is sick or injured. We encourage pet owners to ask questions and seek advice before small problems become serious. A well-cared-for pet is not only healthier, but also more comfortable, better behaved and more secure in the home. Responsible ownership means giving animals the daily care, protection and kindness they deserve.
What Drives Us
Our Mission
Our mission at the Bulawayo SPCA is to protect, rescue and care for animals in need, while helping our community understand how to treat animals with kindness and responsibility. We are here for dogs, cats and other animals that are lost, injured, abandoned, neglected or suffering, and we work to give them safety, food, care and, where possible, loving new homes. We also believe that many animal problems can be prevented through education, sterilisation, proper veterinary care and responsible ownership. Every animal deserves compassion, protection and the chance to live free from cruelty and neglect.
Get Involved
Helping the Bulawayo SPCA is one of the most meaningful ways to make a difference in the life of an animal that has nowhere else to turn. Many of the dogs and cats that come into our care have been lost, abandoned, hurt, neglected or frightened, and even the smallest act of kindness can help them feel safe again. Animals may not be able to say thank you in words, but they show it in the way they begin to trust, wag their tails, purr, relax, play and look to people with hope again. Whether you donate, volunteer, adopt, foster, sponsor or simply spread the word, your support gives an animal comfort, care and a second chance. It is deeply rewarding to know that your kindness has helped save a life and brought light into an animal’s world.

How to Find the Perfect Pet
Finding the perfect pet starts with being honest about your home, your lifestyle and the care you can give every day. Some dogs need plenty of space, exercise and training, while others may be calmer and better suited to a quieter home. Some cats are playful and confident, while others need patience and time to feel safe. Before adopting, think about your family, children, other pets, working hours, garden space, rental rules and budget for food, vaccinations and vet care. The SPCA team can help guide you toward a dog or cat whose age, size, personality and needs suit your home. The perfect pet is not always the cutest one on the day — it is the one you can love, care for and commit to for life.
