Saving Animals & Finding Homes

Our History

The SPCA movement began in England in 1824 to protect working animals, especially carriage horses, from cruelty and neglect. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide animal welfare movement that helps protect many animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, horses, donkeys and more.

The Bulawayo SPCA is a charity and volunteer-supported organisation that depends on an active committee, public support and fundraising to continue its work. Our clinic helps treat both rescued animals and members of the public’s pets, with income from the clinic helping to support daily operations and staff costs.

About us

The Bulawayo SPCA is here to protect and care for animals in Bulawayo and surrounding areas. Our main focus is helping cats and dogs, but our heart is for all animals that need kindness and protection.

We rescue animals that are lost, abandoned, injured, neglected or being treated cruelly. We give them a safe place, food, care, and when possible, help them find loving new homes.

We also work with the community. Many animal problems can be prevented when people understand what pets need. A dog is not just for guarding a gate. A cat is not just for catching rats. They are living animals that feel pain, fear, hunger, cold, love and trust.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

Our mission at the Bulawayo SPCA is to protect, rescue and care for animals in need, while helping our community understand how to treat animals with kindness and responsibility. We are here for dogs, cats and other animals that are lost, injured, abandoned, neglected or suffering, and we work to give them safety, food, care and, where possible, loving new homes. We also believe that many animal problems can be prevented through education, sterilisation, proper veterinary care and responsible ownership. Every animal deserves compassion, protection and the chance to live free from cruelty and neglect.

What we do:

  • Rescue cats and dogs in need.

  • Care for animals at the SPCA until they can go home or be adopted.

  • Investigate reports of cruelty or neglect.

  • Help with lost and found animals.

  • Run adoption processes so animals go to safe homes.

  • Encourage spaying and neutering to reduce unwanted litters.

  • Carry out TNR work, especially with community cats and dogs where appropriate.

  • Offer veterinary services through our clinic. Please phone first to check availability and prices.

  • Teach the public about vaccinations, feeding, dental care, disease prevention and responsible ownership.

Our TNR work explained simply

TNR means Trap, Neuter and Return. It is mostly used for community cats, but similar community animal control work may also be done with dogs where suitable.

  1. Trap: The animal is safely caught.
  2. Neuter: A vet sterilises the animal so it cannot have babies.
  3. Return: If the animal is healthy and has a safe area, it may be returned to where it lives.

TNR helps stop the number of stray animals from growing. It also reduces fighting, mating noise, unwanted litters and suffering.
